What Is Graphite?

Graphite is a naturally occurring crystalline form of carbon with a unique layered structure. These layers can slide over each other easily, giving graphite its characteristic lubricity. But what makes graphite truly exceptional for industrial applications is its remarkable combination of properties:

Low Density – Graphite is exceptionally lightweight, with a density of just 1.3–1.9 g/cm³. That is about 1/5 the density of copper, making graphite an ideal choice for applications where weight reduction is critical, such as aerospace and portable electronics.

High-Temperature Resistance – Graphite is one of the most heat-resistant materials known. It can withstand temperatures up to 3,850°C (melting point) and remains stable even under extreme thermal shock. In fact, at 2,500°C, graphite’s strength doubles compared to room temperature.

Excellent Electrical & Thermal Conductivity – Unlike most non-metals, graphite conducts electricity and heat exceptionally well – over 100 times better than typical non-metals. This makes it ideal for electrodes, heating elements, and thermal management applications.

Chemical Inertness – Graphite is chemically stable and resists attack from most acids, alkalis, and organic solvents at room temperature. It remains stable in oxidizing atmospheres up to approximately 550°C.

Self-Lubricating – The layered structure allows graphite to serve as an excellent dry lubricant, functioning effectively at temperatures from 200°C to 2,000°C without the need for liquid oils.

Low Thermal Expansion – Graphite has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion (1.2 × 10⁻⁶/°C), meaning it resists cracking during rapid temperature changes – a property known as thermal shock resistance.

Why Graphite Machining Requires Expertise

Graphite may look like a soft material, but machining it presents unique challenges that demand specialized knowledge and equipment:

High Tool Wear – Graphite is highly abrasive. Standard cutting tools can wear out in just 3–4 hours of machining. Successful graphite machining requires diamond-coated or carbide tools with optimized geometries.

Brittleness & Chipping – Graphite is strong but brittle. Unlike metals that are smoothly “cut” away, graphite fractures along grain boundaries under cutting stress, producing dust-like chips. Without proper technique, edges can chip or break out.

Dust Control – Machining graphite generates fine dust particles (as small as 5μm) that can accumulate on sensitive equipment, cause electrical shorts, and even pose explosion risks. Effective dust extraction and ventilation systems are essential.

Precision Requirements – Many graphite applications – from semiconductor susceptors to EDM electrodes – demand micron-level accuracy. Sharp tools, optimized cutting paths, and rigorous quality control are non-negotiable.

At Prototeque, we combine years of graphite machining experience with specialized equipment and strict process control to deliver precision graphite parts that meet the most demanding specifications.
